Richard Felton Outcault

Outcault, Richard Felton (1863–1928), U.S. cartoonist, originator of the Yellow Kid and Buster Brown comic strips. Joseph Pulitzer's New York Evening World published them on yellow newsprint. The strips were so successful that William Randolph Hearst of the New York Journal lured Outcault away to draw the Yellow Kid for him. Pulitzer then hired another cartoonist to compete with Outcault. From such unprincipled competitive practices arose the term “yellow journalism.”
