Orléans



Orléans, family name of 2 branches of the French royal line. The house of Valois-Orléans was founded by Louis, duke of Orléans (1372–1407), whose grandson ascended the throne (1498) as Louis XII. The house of Bourbon-Orléans was founded by Philippe, duke of Orléans (1640–1701), brother of King Louis XIV. His son, Philippe (1674–1723), was regent of France (1715–23). Louis Philippe (1773–1850) was the sole member of the house to become king (1830–48).
