Orchid

Orchid, plant of the large family Orchidaceae (15,000–30,000 species) that produces colorful and elaborate flowers. Some species are native to cold and temperate regions, but most occur in tropical, damp climates. Orchid flowers are specially adapted to insect pollination, some requiring a particular species of insect. Orchids are of little economic importance except as curious ornamental plants; cultivation has developed into an extensive hobby throughout the world.
