Hans Christian Oersted



Oersted, Hans Christian (1777–1851), Danish physicist. His discovery (1820) that a magnetized needle can be deflected by an electric current passing through a wire gave birth to the science of electromagnetism. The unit of magnetic field strength, the oersted, is named after him.
