Oaxaca



Oaxaca, southern Mexican state bordering the Gulf of Tehuantepec, founded by Aztecs c.1500. Oaxaca de Juárez is the capital. Covering 36,821 sq mi (95,366 sq km), it is mountainous with deep, fertile valleys; farming is the most important activity. Mineral resources include gold and silver. The population is predominantly Indian.
