Oak Ridge National Laboratory



Oak Ridge National Laboratory, in Tennessee, one of the largest energy research centers in the United States. Founded (1942) by the U.S. government during World War II to develop the atomic bomb, the laboratory is still an important center for nuclear as well as nonnuclear research. Although under contract with the U.S. Department of Energy, the center is now privately operated and connected to a large network of Southern universities.
