Northfield



Northfield (pop. 12,562), city in southeastern Minnesota, on the Cannon River, 40 mi (64 km) south of St. Paul. It was founded by John W. North in 1855. The city annually celebrates the heroism of citizens who thwarted a Jesse James bank robbery. Carleton and St. Olaf colleges were established here in the 19th century. Local industries produce cereal and machinery.
