Norfolk



Norfolk (pop. 286,500), city-port of southeast Virginia, on the Elizabeth River and the southern side of Hampton Roads. An industrial and shipping center, Norfolk is the largest city in Virginia. Its port ships coal, chemicals, textiles, food products, and lumber. Norfolk Naval Base (commissioned 1817) is the largest in the United States. Norfolk is also a resort center, with many parks, gardens, and recreational facilities in or near the city. Cultural institutions include Norfolk State College, Old Dominion University, the Museum of Arts and Sciences, and Scope, a new $30 million cultural and convention center.
