Nitrate

Nitrate, chemical compound, generally sodium (NaNO3) or potassium nitrate (KNO3), formed in the soil by bacteria. Plants use nitrates to make protein. Nitrates are used in making explosives, fireworks, heart medicine, and photographic film, and are added to the soil as fertilizers to replace depleted nitrogen.
