Niger River



Niger River, third-longest river of Africa. Along with its eastern branch, the Benue, it drains an area of more than 1 million sq mi (2.59 million sq km) in west Africa. Rising in southwestern Guinea, it flows 2,600 mi (4,180 km), curving northeast, east, and then southeast into Nigeria, eventually running south to the Gulf of Guinea, where it forms a delta.
