Martin Niemöller



Niemöller, Martin (1892–1984), German Lutheran pastor who opposed the Nazis and Adolf Hitler. He was confined in concentration camps (1938–45). He organized the “Declaration of Guilt” (1945), in which German churches admitted their failure to resist the Nazis. He was president (1961–68) of the World Council of Churches.
