Nez Percé

Nez Percé, Native American tribe of what is now western Idaho, northeastern Oregon, and southeastern Washington. Noted horse breeders, they ceded (1855) much of their territory to the United States. The fraudulent cession of a further 75% of their land (1863) led to the Nez Percé War of 1877, in which 300 Indians held out for 5 months against 5,000 U.S. troops.
