New York World's Fair

New York World's Fair, 2 fairs in New York City that presented art, culture, science, and technology exhibits. The first fair (1939 and 1940), based on the theme “Building the World of Tomorrow,” introduced the public to such new products as television. The second fair (1964–65), based on the theme “Peace Through Understanding,” introduced computers and communications satellites. Each fair developed symbolic monuments: An obelisk called the Tryon and a sphere called the Perisphere were erected in 1939 and a steel globe called the Unisphere was erected in 1964.
