Newt

Newt, any of various small salamanders found in many areas of the Northern Hemisphere. The adults feed on small animals and spend much of their time on land, but they return to water to breed. The male deposits a bag containing the sperm cells that is picked up by the female. She lays her eggs one at a time, wrapping each in the leaf of a water plant. The eggs hatch into larvae that have external gills. By the fall, they emerge onto land as efts, with lungs and rough skins.
