New Sweden



New Sweden, Swedish colony on the Delaware River extending from the present site of Trenton, N.J., to the mouth of the river. Founded by the New Sweden Company in 1638 under the leadership of Peter Minuit, it was taken over by the Dutch, led by Peter Stuyvesant, in 1655.
