John Newbery

Newbery, John (1713–67), English publisher and bookseller in the field of children's literature. Known for tiny, colorful books referred to as penny books, such as A Little Pretty Pocket-Book (1744) and Goody-Two-Shoes (1765), he essentially created the first market for the publication of books for children in English. The Newbery Medal, a yearly prize awarded in the field of children's literature since 1922, is named after him.
