Alexander Nevsky



Nevsky, Alexander (1220–63), Russian national hero. His military victories over the Swedes at the Neva River (1240) and over the Teutonic Livonian knights on the ice of Lake Peipus (1242) made him preeminent among Russian princes. He later became grand duke of Kiev and Novgorod (1252).
