Saint John Nepomucene Neumann



Neumann, Saint John Nepomucene (1811–60), U.S. Roman Catholic bishop, canonized 1977. Born and educated in Bohemia (now Czechoslovakia), he came to the United States and was ordained a priest in 1836, joining the Redemptorist Fathers missionary society in 1840 and appointed bishop of Philadelphia in 1852. Under Neumann there was a substantial increase in the number of churches and parochial schools in Philadelphia.
