Nettle

Nettle, common name for a family of plants (Urticaceae) including shrubs and trees, many species of whose leaves bear brittle hollow hairs that can penetrate the skin. The hairs contain fomic acid, a toxic substance that causes irritation and sometimes blistering. Nevertheless, cattle eat stinging nettles, and in parts of Europe young nettles are cooked and eaten.
