Neman River

Neman River (Lithuanian: Nemunas; Polish: Niemen), river in the former Soviet Union. Approximately 582 mi (937 km) long, the Neman River flows westward from the republic of Byelorussia, then northward through the republic of Lithuania, to empty into Kurland Gulf of the Baltic Sea. Although the river freezes for up to 5 months each year, it is used as a transportation route for timber. The river also supports a dam for a hydroelectric plant.
