Barents Sea



Barents Sea, shallow arm of the Arctic Ocean north of Norway and European Russia, bounded by Svalbard (Spitsbergen) to the northwest, Franz Josef Land to the north, and Novaya Zemlya to the east. The southwestern portion is warmed by the North Atlantic Drift and remains ice-free in winter; on its southwestern coast lies the former Soviet port of Murmansk.
