Barbarossa



Barbarossa (Khayr ad-Din; c. 1483–1546), Turkish naval commander of the western Mediterranean. As high admiral of the Turkish fleet he captured Tunis and Algiers in 1518 and brought the Barbary states under Turkish sovereignty. In 1533 and 1544 he defeated Italian fleets and raided towns in Greece, Italy, France, and Spain.
