Baltic Sea, arm of the Atlantic Ocean, extending into northern Europe. Its 163,000 sq mi (422,170 sq km) are surrounded by Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, RF, Poland, Germany, and Denmark. It is linked to the North Sea by the Skagerrak, Kattegat, and Oresund straits.
