Bakke case

Bakke case, suit brought by Allan Bakke in 1974 against the University of California claiming that the institution's affirmative-action program had wrongfully denied him admission to medical school solely because he was white. On June 28, 1978, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5 to 4 in Bakke's favor, declaring that strict racial quotas to determine university admission are unconstitutional.
