Azores

Azores (pop. 252,200), 9 mountainous islands in the North Atlantic about 900 mi (1,448 km) west of Portugal. Sao Miguel is the largest and most populated. Colonized and under Portuguese rule since the mid- 15th century, the islands enjoy considerable autonomy.
