Average

Average, number that is typical of a group of numbers or quantities. The 3 kinds of averages—mean, median, and mode—have different statistical significance. The mean is derived by taking the sum of a group of quantities and dividing it by the number of quantities. The median divides a sampling in half; there are the same number of items above and below it. The mode is the most frequently occurring number in a group.
