National Republican Party



National Republican Party, 19th-century U.S. political party formed when the Democratic-Republican Party split up in the 1828 presidential election. The party's presidential candidate in 1832, Henry Clay, was defeated by Andrew Jackson. In 1836 the party merged with other political groups to form the Whig Party.
