Mutual fund, investment company that pools its shareholders' funds and invests them in a broad range of stocks and shares. A shareholder receives dividends for his or her shares in the fund, rather than for individual company shares. Mutual funds are popular amongsmall investors because of the low risk involved (due to the variety of stocks invested in by the mutual fund) and the expert management provided.
