Mummy, corpse preserved, particularly by embalming. The earliest known Egyptian attempts to preserve bodies were c.2600 B.C., It is believed that the body was being prepared for a reunion with the soul. Natural mummification was seen in bodies buried in Danish peat bogs from 300 B.C. to A.D.300.
