Atlantis

Atlantis, in Greek mythology, an island in the western sea (Atlantic Ocean?). Plato described it as an advanced civilization destroyed by volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. The legend has fascinated humanity since antiquity, and many have searched for the lost island. Some scholars identify Atlantis with the Mediterranean island of Thera (also called Santorini), a center of ancient Cretan civilization devastated by volcanic eruptions in 1625 B.C.
