Atlanta



Atlanta (pop. 394,900), capital and largest city of Georgia, seat of Fulton County. Founded in 1837 as the terminus of the Western and Atlantic Railroad, Atlanta was burned by Union forces under General William Sherman during the Civil War in 1864. It was rapidly rebuilt and is today the major commercial and financial center of the South Atlantic states. The city has more than 20 colleges and universities.
