Astronaut, term for U.S. test pilot or scientist chosen by NASA to crew space flights. Alan B. Shepard, Jr., made the first suborbital flight in 1961. John Glenn, Jr., orbited the earth in 1962, and Edwin E. Aldrin, Jr., and Neil Armstrong landed on the moon in 1969.
