Herbert Henry Asquith t Earl of Oxford (1s) and Asquith (1852–1928)

Asquith, Herbert Henry, 1st Earl of Oxford and Asquith (1852–1928), English prime minister, 1908–16. His term as head of the Liberal Party was one of great activity and political reform, but his leadership foundered in Dec. 1916 over his conduct of World War I, coupled with the chaos brought about by the Easter Rising in Ireland. He resigned in favor of the rival Liberal leader, David Lloyd George.
