Asafetida



Asafetida, foul-smelling substance extracted from the roots of an Asian herb. Asafetida has long had a mystical significance and was often used in magical ceremonies or worn as an amulet to keep away evil spirits. It was also once used in medicine as a sedative. The plant belongs to the carrot family (Umbelliferae).
