Araucanians



Araucanians, South American tribes famous for their resistance to the Spaniards, beginning with the 16th-century Spanish invasion of what is now central Chile. Many Araucanians crossed the Andes into Argentina on stolen Spanish horses. The tribes were defeated in the late 19th century. Today over 200,000 Araucanians live in Chile.
