Arab League

Arab League, organization promoting economic, cultural, and political cooperation among Arab states, founded in 1945. Its members include 21 of the Arab states and the PLO. In 1948 the members attacked the new state of Israel, which had been established on what the Arabs considered Arab land. The league broke with Egypt, an original member, in 1979 after the country signed a peace treaty with Israel. Egypt rejoined the league in 1989.
