Appolonius of Rhodes

Appolonius of Rhodes (3rd century B.C.), Greek poet, pupil of Callimachus, and later head of the library at Alexandria. In addition to shorter works, he wrote the epic Argonautica, describing the expedition of Jason and the Argonauts. The poem uses much of Homer's style and meter, and its portrayal of Medea is thought to have influenced the Roman poet Vergil in the creation of Dido, a character in the Aeneid
