Appendicitis

Appendicitis, inflammation of the appendix, often caused by obstruction to its narrow opening, followed by swelling and bacterial infection. Acute appendicitis can lead to rupture of the organ, formation of an abscess, or peritonitis. Symptoms include abdominal pain (usually in the right lower abdomen), nausea, vomiting, and fever. Early surgical removal of the appendix is essential; any abscess requires drainage of pus and delayed removal.
