Anzio



Anzio (pop. 27,100), Italian fishing port and seaside resort about 30 mi (48 km) south of Rome. As ancient Antium, it was the birthplace of the emperors Caligula and Nero. Anzio was the site of Allied landings in Jan. 1944, during World War II, leading to a bloody battle in which casualties were high.
