Antwerp (pop. 462,900), city and leading port, on the Scheldt River in northern Belgium. It is the capital of Antwerp province, the commercial and cultural center of Flemish Belgium, and an important manufacturing city, with oil, metal, automobile, and diamond industries. It was the center of the great Flemish school of painting: artists like Brueghel, Rubens, and Van Dyck worked there in the 16th and 17th centuries.
