Antigua

Antigua, also called Antigua Guatemala (pop. 15,800), city in south central Guatemala, once the capital. After an earthquake and flood leveled an earlier capital, Antigua was founded in 1542, quickly becoming one of the richest cities in the New World, only to be destroyed itself by an earthquake in 1773. Today Antigua is a trading and tourist center in a coffee-growing area.
