Antigone



Antigone, in Greek mythology, daughter of Oedipus and Jocasta. When her brothers Eteocles and Polynices killed each other in combat, Creon, king of Thebes and Jocasta's brother, refused to allow the burial of Polynices, whom he regarded as a traitor. When Antigone defied him, Creon sentenced her to death. She is the subject of tragedies by the ancient Greek playwright Sophocles and the modern French playwright Jean Anouilh.
