Annapolis



Annapolis (pop. 31,700), capital of Maryland, seat of Anne Arundel County on the Severn River near Chesapeake Bay. It was settled in 1649 by Puritans from Virginia and given its present name in 1694. It is the site of St. John's College (founded 1696) and the U.S. Naval Academy (established 1845). Local industries include seafood processing and boat building.
