Animation

Animation, cinematographic technique creating the illusion of movement by projection of a series of drawings or photographs showing successive views of an action. The first animated cartoons were made by Emile Cohl in France in 1907. Walt Disney pioneered in the use of sound and color and in producing cartoons that aimed at suspense and drama as well as broad humor. In classic animation, drawings on transparent celluloid (cels) are superimposed to form each picture; only cels showing motion are changed from frame to frame.
