Angevin



Angevin, name of 2 medieval royal dynasties originating in the Anjou region of western France. The first ruled in parts of France and in Jerusalem and England. Henry II, son of Geoffrey of Anjou, became England's first Angevin (or Plantagenet) ruler in 1154. His descendants held power in England until 1485. The second branch, which began in 1266 when Charles, brother of Louis IX of France, became king of Naples and Sicily, ruled in Italy, Hungary, and Poland until the end of the 15th century.
