Konrad Adenauer



Adenauer, Konrad (1876–1967), first chancellor of West Germany (1949–63). A politician since World War I, he was twice imprisoned by the Nazis. He became leader of the Christian Democratic Union Party in 1947, and as chancellor he led West Germany through its postwar recovery into membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the European Common Market.
