Adelaide (pop. 1,049,900), capital of the state of South Australia in Australia. Located near the mouth of Torrens River, the city is an industrial center for automobiles and textiles and the commercial hub of a large region, exporting wool, grains, and dairy products. Adelaide accounts for almost two-thirds of the state's population and has many notable buildings and parks.
