Addis Ababa (pop. 1,425,000), capital of Ethiopia (since 1889). The modern city, standing on an 8,000-ft (2,438-m) central plateau, is Ethiopia's center for trade, communications, and administration and houses the headquarters of the Organization of African Unity.
