Adams-Onís Treaty



Adams-Onís Treaty, or Transcontinental Treaty, U.S.-Spanish agreement (1819) defining the western boundary of the United States, negotiated by Secretary of State John Quincy Adams and the Spanish minister to the United States, Luis de Onís. Spain ceded Florida to the United States in return for the abandonment of U.S. claims to Texas.
