Actium

Actium, now Ákra Nikólaos, promontory on the west coast of Greece. In a great sea battle fought near it in 31 B.C., Octavian's naval forces crushed those of Marc Antony and Cleopatra. Victory gave mastery of the Roman world to Octavian, who later became the first Roman emperor, Augustus.
